Lumber moisture evaluation by a reflective cavity photothermal technique
نویسندگان
چکیده
Photothermal methods constitute a convenient approach for the nondestructive quality control of industrial materials because they are rapid and noninvasive. One such application is the monitoring of moisture in unseasoned lumber for drying mill process control. This paper describes a photothermal method for the analysis of moisture in wood by measuring its surface temperature rise under laser radiation. It is shown that this parameter is much more sensitive than thermal diffusivity to moisture content variations. A reflective cavity technique is used to increase both the absorptivity and the emissivity of the inspected surface in order to improve the measurement reliability. Results obtained with an off-center hemispherical cavity on wood samples of different moisture content are presented and discussed. Revue Phys. Appl. 23 (1988) 1565-1576 SEPTEMBRE 1988,

Industrial Evaluation of Re-dry Strategy for Softwood Lumber
This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the first commercial scale dry-sort-redry (DSRD) strategy for drying of 2x4 Pacific coast hemlock (PCH) lumber. The DSRD strategy is a methodology designed to reduce final moisture content variability in kiln dried lumber by complementing conventional drying with radio frequency vacuum (RFV) drying technology. The strategy’s objective is to avoi...

In this paper, I systematically investigated Micro-Cavity PhotoThermal Spectroscopy (MC-PTS), a novel technique for ultra-sensitive detection of chemical molecular species. I first derive the photothermal enhancement factor and noise characteristics of the technique using a generic theoretical model, followed by numerical analysis of a design example using chalcogenide glass micro-disk cavities...
متن کاملNew methodology to oPtImIze SortINg IN wood dryINg♣
One important problem in lumber drying is to maintain the lumber moisture content distribution within certain minimum and maximum values. Over-drying and under-drying are common causes for lower grade recovery and dimensional stability problems. It is known that both over-drying and underdrying can be reduced by sorting green lumber into different moisture content groups and sorting also offers...
متن کاملFast online near infrared technique to predict modulus of elasticity and moisture content of sawn lumber
Wood products are required high degrees of structural performance and reliability in case of construction material. However, mechanical properties and moisture content of wood vary widely because of its highly anisotropic characteristics. Therefore, accurate nondestructive grading systems are desirable for wood industries. We developed a fast online grading apparatus for sawn lumber based on ne...
